Wildest coffee in the world, Arabica and Robusta are at risk

Of the 124 wild coffees, 75 species are on the verge of extinction, mainly due to climate change and forest cover, which is 60% of the total coffee content. This research was done in the world’s largest biodiversity at the Cook Garden in England’s Botanical Park.

According to the researchers, two species of wild coffee, Arabica and Robusta are the most consumed in the world, they are also included in the list of extinct species. Of the 75 species standing on the verge of extinction, 13 are in the most distressed conditions. If there is no improvement in climate change, 50% of species will end forever till 2088.

60 percent of the species of Coffee in danger

According to the researchers, two-thirds of the world’s people drink Arabica coffee, it has been included in the premium category. Its yield is rapidly declining, which has created difficulties for farmers and traders. According to the scientists, as an alternative to Arabica and Robusta, there are some varieties of coffee that can be drunk.

This is the first time that such a large research has been done on its 124 species. Most of them are grown in Africa, Asia, Australia, Madagascar and Indian Sea Islands. According to this research published in the Science Advance magazine, the extinct species has been included in the International List for the International Union for Conservation of Nature in the Red List.

Scientists say that less than half of these species have been kept in seed banks. There are no information about where more than a quarter of the species is present.
